Licence, source code and open formats
PiCom is free for end users and openly licensed for non-commercial use. Commercial licences are available on request.
PiCom licence
PiCom, by Sensory App House Ltd, is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0).
This means you may:
- share PiCom: copy and redistribute it in any medium or format
- adapt PiCom: remix, change and build on it
as long as you:
- give credit: name Sensory App House, link to the licence, and say if you made changes, without suggesting that we endorse you or your use
- do not use it commercially
- add no further restrictions: no legal terms or technical measures that stop others doing what the licence allows
The full legal code is the licence that applies; this summary is for convenience.
If you got PiCom from an app store, that store's terms may also apply to your copy.
Commercial use
To redistribute or bundle PiCom commercially, or for custom projects, email sales@sensoryapphouse.com with an outline of what you have in mind.
Included boards
The communicator templates included with PiCom have their own licences:
| Boards | Author | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Project Core 24, 60 and 112, and Project Core boards | Project Core | CC BY |
| CommuniKate 12 and 20 | Kate McCallum | CC BY-NC-SA |
More about these boards is on the Open Board Format examples page.
PiCom's own symbols are licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0. See Symbols.
Source code
PiCom's source code and board translations are published on GitHub, along with any underlying licences.
Open Board Format
Communication boards take a lot of work to make, and they should not be locked to one device, brand or app. The Open Board Format is a shared file format for AAC boards that lets people pass boards between different communication apps instead of starting from scratch.
PiCom fully supports it:
- .obf: a single board
- .obz: a set of linked boards with their images, packaged as one file
Boards made in Sensory Boards or other compatible apps open in PiCom, and PiCom boards open in them.
